STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. STEAM at Nova is an opportunity for students to learn math and science through inquiry, self-driven, hands-on work, whether that be in a classroom, lab, or out in the world. In this section of the Open House, hear from STEAM teachers about what STEAM classes at Nova have to offer, and check out some past projects from students!

“The project/assignment I most enjoyed was one off the observations for ecological exploration. During this assignment I was instructed to go outside and observe an area in a park. I drew some diagrams and found some fungus.”

“This is an illustration of a design from the Legend of Zelda, made using a graphing calculator in pre calculus. The project was a really fun way to re-enforce my understanding of graphing different functions.”

"This is a collage/sketch I made in a sketchbook class a few years ago. That class focused on the free expression of the individual through different types of art. "

“I took Adam’s Earthology class, and the final inquiry project for the semester was to pick one of the CHNOPS chemical elements and learn about how humans are messing their cycles up. Then, we’d look into solutions for the issues humans have caused regarding the chemical element, and propose one of them to the class. I got super into the project, and it still stands to be one of my favorite projects I’ve ever done at Nova”

“My favorite project this year so far has probably been in physical science class, which is a hands-on type class where we get assignments, but don't meet on Zoom. It was the pendulum lab, where we build a pendulum where we can adjust the length and the angle released. I tested 15, 30, 45, and 60 degree angles, along with lengths from a half foot to 3 feet. the results were interesting!”

"One of the projects that I did for Health was creating a general disaster plan. I found it useful not just for class but outside of school as well, considering the plan was for when I was at my house.

The project was a combination of a couple of things. Checking to see if I had things such as extra water, food, batteries, ect, where I was, in case an earthquake happened and I couldn't go outside for a few days. The second part was communicating with the people that I lived with, which was useful. I found it very interesting to do projects that affect the real world as well as just in school."

"The first project that I did for chemistry class was trying to dye fabric with dogwood bark. The project was really fun, and also helped me get used to doing more free-form projects, which is more Novas' style. I was really interested in dying fabric at the time, and Nova gave me the opportunity to both express that interest and get credit at the same time."
